A paragraph describing the group

International Hereditary Cancer Center (IHCC) was created in 1992 as a part of Pomeranian Medical University. IHCC is a UICC member.

Scientists of IHCC have published 200 publications on hereditary cancer most of which has been published in journals from SCI list.

They have also elaborated patents for Poland on diagnosis of:
1) MSH2/MLH1 carriers by analysis focused on evaluation of mutations the most frequently occurring in the country (patent no P-350499),
2) BRCA1 carriers by analysis limited to 3 founder mutations - 5382insC, C61G, 4153delA (patent no P-335917).

Particularly valuable are also patents for CHEK2 and NOD2 testing. Head of IHCC, prof. Jan Lubinski has been author and coordinator of 3-year EC projects:
1) on Development of Cancer Family Syndrome Registries in Eastern Europe (project no QLRI-CT-1999-00063),
2) on Identification of new cancer susceptibility genes by linkage analyses in Polish families with aggregation of breast or colorectal cancers (MTKD-CT-2004-510114).

Cancer research

Particular achievements also include the first population screening for familial cancers in West-Pomerania with 1.5million inhabitants.

At present, we are the center performing surveillance in almost 3000 BRCA1 mutation carriers and almost 100 HNPCC patients with detected MSH2/MLH1 mutations.

Development of registry unique at worldwide scale of cancer family syndromes with the following parameters:

More than 2,300 of diagnosed and registered BRCA1 mutation carriers – the largest number in the world.

More than 5,000 registered families with other cancer family syndromes or strong aggregation of malignancies with biological samples available from at least 1 affected relative.

Almost 80,000 DNAs from cancer patients or their relatives.

Almost 1,000 cell lines from BRCA1 mutation carriers.

Pedigree data from 1,258,000 persons - more than 80% of Regional Health Care Company collected during realisation of 1st worldwide project for inherited cancer prevention.
