A paragraph describing the group

The ‘Queensland’ group of the Consortium comprises principal investigators from various groups across a number of institutions - the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, the Institute of Molecular Bioscience and the Queensland Cancer Fund. Broadly, the Group is interested in identifying risk factors for melanoma through classical genetic epidemiologic analysis of several population-based cohorts of melanoma cases and controls. These include samples of children, adolescents, twins and men over 50 years of age with melanoma, as well as a sample of all melanoma cases ascertained in Queensland during the period 1982-1990.

The Group aims to identify both high and low penetrance genes for melanoma predisposition and is focussing initially on genes associated with variation in human pigmentation as candidates for the latter. Multiple-case families are being screened for mutations in the known melanoma susceptibility genes (encoding p16, p14 and CDK4), and those families in which mutations are not found are being utilized in conjunction with similar families from other groups within the Consortium in a genome-wide linkage scan for novel high penetrance melanoma genes.
