Dermoscopy Tutorial Cover
New GenoMEL tutorial promoting dermoscopy
GenoMEL has created a new tutorial for clinicians. This tutorial is a basic introduction to dermoscopy and contains 100’s of images to help clinicians develop their diagnostic skill. Dermoscopy is a technique that improves the early recognition of melanoma. To view the tutorial please click the image above.
Dr Ruby Chang
Dr Ruby Chang, who led a major pooled data analysis for the GenoMEL consortium, has now left the University of Leeds to take up a post at the prestigious Royal Veternary College in London. Ruby has played a major role in numerous GenoMEL projects and led the writing of several GenoMEL papers. We wish her well in her new endeavours!

Dutch melanoma awareness leaflet
Initiative to raise public awareness of melanoma in the Netherlands
As part of a project supported by the GenoMEL Exchange Fund, our Leiden group has distributed 20,000 melanoma awareness leaflets to Dutch hospitals and family doctors. These colourful leaflets have proved extremely popular and point out the difference between melanomas (‘sharks’) and moles (‘dolphins’) in a non-threatening way.
Six month extension
The European Commission has granted GenoMEL a six month extension. The new end date for the grant period is the 31st May 2011.

New JAAD paper
A new paper, led by Dr Sancy Leachman, has been published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD). Entitled, “Selection criteria for genetic assessment of patients with familial melanoma”, this consensus paper represents many months of consultation and detailed discussion.

A new non-promotional website has been created by Bristol Myers Squibb dealing with the latest advances in immunotherapy in oncology (including melanoma). It is aimed at healthcare professionals and can be found here.

Nature Genetics article
Nature Genetics have published a GenoMEL letter abstract entitled 'Genome-wide association study identifies three loci associated with melanoma risk'. This is a major achievement and a tribute to the hard work of everyone involved.
The Queen’s Birthday List
GenoMEL member Professor Richard Kefford was recently made a member of the Order of Australia. Professor Kefford, the Director of the Westmead Institute for Cancer Research in Sydney, was given the award for service to medicine. Congratulations!

Annual GenoMEL meetings
Last month the 2009 GenoMEL meeting took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Both the hospitality of our Slovenian hosts and the beauty of their country impressed everyone. The 2010 meeting will be in Leeds 22-25 June.

New tutorial for clinicians
GenoMEL has produced an online tutorial to assist clinicians in the early diagnosis of melanoma. This interactive package, containing text, pictures and videos, is available here.
New paper
There is a paper this month in the Journal of Medical Ethics that draws on the consortium’s experiences of dealing with genetic research test results. The author, Paul Affleck, is one of GenoMEL’s project managers. Further details are available here.

New GenoMEL paper
The International Journal of Cancer has published a new GenoMEL paper entitled 'A pooled analysis of Melanocytic nevus phenotype and the risk of cutaneous melanoma at different latitudes'. This paper describes a pooled analysis using naevus data from 15 case-control studies, involving over 10,000 individuals. Dr Yu-mei Chang led this work on behalf of GenoMEL.
