Melanoom is een vorm van huidkanker die ontstaat vanuit de pigment cellen in de huid. Onbehandeld kan een melanoom uitzaaiingen geven in het hele lichaam en is uiteindelijk meestal dodelijk. In Nederland overleeft tegenwoordig 80% van de mensen die een melanoom krijgen.

In veel landen komt melanoom steeds vaker voor. Echter, het is nog steeds ongebruikelijk als meerdere leden van één familie een melanoom hebben. Als meer dan 1 persoon in een familie melanoom heeft, betekent dit dat er mogelijk op gebied van de erfelijkheid iets mis is. Dat "iets" kan betekenen dat andere familieleden ook meer kans hebben op een melanoom.

De volgende informatie is voor mensen die menen dat er in hun familie mogelijk een erfelijke aanleg is voor het krijgen van een melanoom, waardoor de leden van die familie een verhoogd risico hebben op een melanoom. Het is ook voor personen die al weten dat ze een verhoogd risico hebben.
